Do you have a PhD? Are you interested in retraining as a “Computing Systems Engineer” for a permanent job supporting Scientific Research? STFC’s Scientific Computing Department (SCD) is now offering a year long conversion scheme that will progress into a permanent role for those with an interest in computing, but not direct computing degrees and doctorates. It will allow you to use your PhD to support science, while developing new skills in computing.
In SCD we research, develop and support leading edge high-performance computational and data storage infrastructures and scientific software to perform and support world class science. We have over 180 staff in roles such as systems management, research software engineers and computational scientists who provide projects and services to make a real difference to the scientific communities we support. We help those communities to store and transfer research data from small to large scale and provide software to analyse, simulate, visualise and locate research data.
While in the PhD conversion scheme participants will work within a group, on a project as well as maintaining a service. One third of your time is expected to be taking part in learning and development activities, some of which will be organised, others will be self led to be specific to your learning needs and project requirements.
