Stewart Clark studied maths and physics at the University of Aberdeen, then did a PhD at the University of Edinburgh.  His PhD thesis was on Complex Structure in Tetrahedral Semiconductors.

He spent three years as a post-doc researcher at Edinburgh before moving to the University of Durham as Lecturer in Physics. He is now a professor in Physics at Durham.

His research interests lie mainly in the development of density functional theory (DFT) and the implementation of the work with the CASTEP code:

  • Programming and implementing first principle and empirical computer simulations for solid state, liquid and molecular systems.
  • Density functional perturbation theory.
  • First principles calculation of spectroscopic measurements.
  • Computer simulations of structural and vibrational properties.
  • Development of new techniques to calculate excited electronic states.
  • Large scale computer simulations using high performance computing.
