I joined the STFC Graduate Scheme in September 2020 after graduating with an MSci Mathematics (Climate Science) degree from the University of Exeter. I have now completed two rotations in SCD, and will soon be moving to the Theoretical and Computational Physics Group for my next project.
In my first graduate rotation, I was based in the Data Science and Technology group, where I worked on improving and extending the functionality of the user profile pages of the Physical Sciences Data-Science Service (PSDS) website. For my second rotation, I worked in the Computational Mathematics Group on FitBenchmarking, which is an open source Python package designed to compare how different fit minimizers perform on a variety of fitting problems. During my time on the project, I introduced support for bounded problems, added MATLAB fitting software, and developed code which allowed for Hessians to be used.
