SCD provides services for managing science data and supports STFC facilities and programmes with technology, tools, services and expertise to effectively manage their research data.
SCD provides services for managing science data – data is stored both on disk for fast access and analysis, and on tape as a data repository and for backup and archiving. The largest user by volume is currently the Large Hadron Collider, and the second largest is climate modelling. The department runs high availability databases, most of them Oracle, but also MySQL, which together serve over 10,000 requests per second on average. STFC's data can thus prove useful in many unexpected ways, particularly since we support almost any area of science. It is one of the challenges of the data science group to facilitate this process, to increase the economic and societal impact of the research, in collaboration with other science data centres both in the UK and internationally.
SCD supports STFC facilities (ISIS, Diamond, CLF) and programmes with technology, tools, services and expertise to effectively manage their research data. We build on the storage and computing infrastructure provided within the Scientific Computing Department, to design and build integrated and automated platforms for data management for the science supported by STFC and other scientific collaborators. Further, the department undertakes research and development to keep at the forefront of scientific data management technology and expertise.
