This is a talk I gave a few times during my year associated with the (new at the time) Photon Science Institute in Manchester. Embarrassingly, I can’t actually remember this Hartree Workshop at RAL, but that’s old age for you.
The main theme of the talk was to give a very broad overview of the movement of electrons in condensed systems (the alternative title), and to make a case that it was timely for electronic structure people to start looking at time-dependent problems and phenomena. That was where I thought the action would be, partly because of the various proposals around at the time to build a new free electron laser based photon source/facility in the UK. Unfortunately, that hasn’t happened (yet), but such sources have been built elsewhere, and there is much more time-dependent calculation going on in the electronic structure community world-wide.
