Dr. Barbara Montanari (Director of CoSeC, STFC) and Dr. Stephen Longshaw (CoSeC Technical Lead, STFC) opening the CoSeC Conference
The CoSeC Conference was the brainchild of Dr. Stephen Longshaw, Principal Computational Scientist (STFC) and CoSeC Technical Lead, who organised a varied mix of sessions and talks covering themes across the computational scientific and engineering fields relevant to CoSeC.
The conference was split into four consecutive sessions starting with an introduction to CoSeC delivered by the Director of the program: Dr. Barbara Montanari (STFC). Three further sessions followed: Exascale Computing exploring how modelling and simulations need to adapt to exploit the full exascale potential; Data Science including examples of work on SARS-CoV-2 variants; and Scientific Challenges such as modelling advanced nuclear reactor systems.
Examples of talks presented virtually (top row) and in-person (bottom row) - the full program is available as a downloadable pdf below
Throughout the day the conference was well attended with about 50 in-person and online participants. Stephen commented 'I am very excited that we have finally been able to run a CoSeC-specific conference event as a breakout session at the 2021 Computing Insight UK conference. Over the course of the day attendance was really good, all speakers delivered fantastic content, highlighting the breadth of interrelated computational science that happens across the CoSeC programme. It is my sincere hope that this is just the start and can be the seed for a new, annual series, watch out for announcements for a stand-alone event in 2022!'
