Today sees the launch of the first-ever CoSeC Impact Award. The call for applications is open from November 12th and closes January 31st, 2020. To apply for the award the applicant needs to meet the following criteria:
1) be a Masters or PhD student, or early career researcher (in academia, industry or other) with up to 5 years post doctoral experience (at 31st January 2020);
2) to have received, or be in receipt of, some form of support from CoSeC e.g.
3) able to show how any of the above (or other CoSeC support) has helped you in your work?
The applicant is required to answer a few questions and to summarize how CoSeC has helped them achieve impact with their work, where in the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) definition for the Research Excellence Framework (REF), 'impact' is defined as the “effect on, change or benefit to the economy, society, culture, public policy or services, health, the environment or quality of life in the UK or internationally”.
The winner receives the title of "CoSeC Impact Award Winner 2020" - a great addition to any cv, and the choice of one, all, or a selection of the following...
- A 1-to-1 workshop with a science writer to produce a REF-style case study from your research;
- The opportunity to spend time with CoSeC staff, either learning a specific skill or
finding out more about the work of a CoSeC scientist;
- The opportunity to be a guest of STFC and present a seminar of your work at either Daresbury Laboratory or Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, along with a tour of our facilities;
- The opportunity to present your work to the Collaborative Computational Projects (CCP) Steering Panel, a meeting of all the CCP Chairs;
- And finally, something for your desk... a laser cut perspex award (engraved with the winner's name and 'CoSeC Impact Award Winner 2020’).
The aim of launching this new award is three-fold: it's a means of recognising the work of researchers early in their careers who have been, or continue to be, supported by CoSeC; it's a means of raising awareness of the CoSeC communities, and finally, it's a means of acquiring evidence of the impact of CoSeC and the communities it supports on science, society and the economy. The latter helps us build robust impact case studies for future grant applications, that provide the funds to support the staff who in turn provide the CoSeC support.
